Compostable Packaging Service at Phoenix Power Recyclers

At Phoenix Power Recyclers, we choose to accept certain types of compostable packaging based upon their ability to disintegrate in our process time. However, to do so, we require to assess the proposed packaging on a case-by-case basis.

This is due to the availability of wide range of compostable packaging of different shapes, size and with varying shelf lives.

Many types of compostable products are manufactured using different materials based on the purposes of the packaging or the product to serve.

For example, hot coffee cups versus cold dessert bowls, or the meal packaging to the biodegradable plastic medicinal pill bottles.

All serves different purposes hence all different in its shelf life and degradability too. Some packaging only needs to maintain its integrity only for minutes during the use, but some however requires longer as per the intended use of that product.

Additionally, there are compostable product/packaging manufactured using 100% degradable polymers, or only a percentage of degradable polymers combined with natural bio-product like bamboo, sugarcane essence etc. Most of these packaging or products are also manufactured as per either AS4736-2006 or AS5810-2010.

AS4736-2006 is Australian standard for biodegradable plastics for industrial composting.

The products as per AS4736 standard still requires 12 weeks/~3months for a 90% disintegration to <2mm.

This standard is similar to European Bioplastic standard which is EN13432 but with an additional requirement of a worm test.

AS5810-2010 is Australian standard for Biodegradable plastics for home composting. With this standard the main difference are low temperature and longer duration (up to 6months) for the 90% disintegration. Then there are plastic products available that meet international standard for packaging suitable for organic recycling (ISO18606) and plastics with specifications met for ‘compostable plastics’ (ISO17088).

Many more standards and many more product types available, all are compostable but at certain environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, duration and the process.

Hence, as an in-vessel industrial composting facility that follows AS4454 standards for its final product, Phoenix Power Recyclers requires to understand the product, its composition, certifications etc prior to approving for acceptance to compost.

How It Works:

  1. Approval Process: Submit details of the packaging to confirm it meets compostable standards.
  2. Processing: Packaging is processed using the same high-standard methods as organic waste.
  3. Reuse: The compost produced is used to improve soil health across various applications.
